Portland Marina Water Safety Day<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

An NCI Portland Bill team attended this event on Monday 6th May. The morning was warm with light wind and the gazebo was placed adjacent to the Marina reception, office and facilities building and alongside the thoroughfare leading to the pontoons. This encouraged berth owners to visit the gazebo which along with the usual information at our stand there was additional posters, leaflets and paraphernalia regards the Respect the Water campaign. It was encouraging that a number of children looked at the material which was explained by accompanying adults. As the day wore on dark clouds appeared and subsequently a short downpour heralded rain later in mid afternoon. The final activity of the workshop and clinic programme was to be a talk “Rounding the Bill” The presenters visited our stand and we supplied NCI Portland Bill leaflets and were invited to attend. Near the time of the talk the rain was persistent so we packed up then attended in uniform. The room was packed and the presenters included praise for our NCI operation at the Bill which through their own experiences gave examples of what we do and their interaction with our Lookout.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

St George’s Centre Open Day<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is the first St George’s Centre Open Day since the covid pandemic and we were invited to take part in the event. The open day showcased artisan studios and hall users such as Island Voices (choir) and Platinum Dance School both performed during the event. We were located in the main hall along with Portland Local History Centre, W.I, Royal Manor Workshops, Portland Museum and Christian Worship stands. This event provided us with the opportunity to promote our operation at Portland Bill to the local community. Several event visitors and stand attendees engaged with our team some seeking information on what volunteering to join our team entailed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Portland Marina Car Boot Boat Jumble Day<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The NCI Portland Bill events team attended something new to us, which was the Portland Marina car boot, boat jumble sale. This was the first time we have come up against this type of event which was a boat parts jumble sale based upon the well known and love car boot sale. As this was the first time we have attended we were not sure what to expect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We made some interesting contacts and a small amount of sales but all of the team agreed that the experience was very interesting and we would certainly attend future boat jumble sales at Portland Marina.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Portland Marina Water Safety Day<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The NCI Portland Bill events team attended Portland Marina Water Safety Day on Monday 1st May this year. There was some on-water activity with kayaks and paddleboards but no stands so our gazebo and paraphernalia made a prominent presence. Footfall around the Marina was light given the pleasant weather and it being a Bank Holiday. The Marina Team commented on this also and suggested that the Boat That Rocks closure, for refurbishment, may have been a contributory factor. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nevertheless our team, as always, enjoyed chatting to visitors to our stand. The star turn of the event was our watchkeeper Paul Weinberg playing his saxophone. This was enjoyed by our team, the Marina Team and notably visitors to the Marina who stopped to listen bringing smiles from everyone. The haunting and smooth sounds wafting over the pontoons turned heads. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In spite of the low event attendance all agreed the event was worthwhile and very enjoyable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Portland Marina Presentation<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Portland Marina presentation party Tom Ralph Assistant Manager, , Bee Woodland Assistant Manager and of course Paul Swaine Manager. and Ron Brooks (NCI Portland Bill)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During 2022 Paul Swain the Portland Marina Manager and his team raised funds to support National Coastwatch Institution Portland Bill, this included a boat jumble sale which was assembled and staged by Portland Marina also for the benefit of NCI Portland Bill.  This culminated with a presentation of a \u00a3850 donation to a delighted Ron Brooks the NCI Portland Bill Fundraising Support Officer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On behalf of the Station Manager and the entire NCI Portland Bill Team Ron thanked Paul and his Team for the donation all of which will be used to support watches at the Station Lookout on Portland Bill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The NCI Portland Bill Team look forward to working with the Marina Team during 2023 to promote our operation and to benefit berth holders and visitors to Portland Marina.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Santa’s Little Helpers<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Station Manager, Geoff Peters, was on Watch two days after Christmas with Roster Officer, Roger Harrington. They received a visit from 6 month old twins Henri (pictured with Dad, Matt) and Lillie (in mum, Kadi’s arms). The twins presented the Lookout with a very generous and much appreciated donation of \u00a3981.00 from money raised by their parent’s company Crossway Travel’s recent Christmas fundraising event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unfortunately it was a very windy overcast day so there wasn’t much to see regarding shipping but Kadi and Matt were very impressed with the Station and the work we do on a day to day basis. Little Henri however was more interested in Geoff’s beard, perhaps it reminded him of a certain Santa?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our sincere thanks to all the coach passengers who contributed towards the donation, the Team at Portland really cannot thank them enough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

‘Nippy Dippers’ Bring Entertainment and Much Needed Funds.<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Team at Portland Bill is so grateful to a loyal band of local supporters who continue to come up with new and innovative ideas to raise money for the Lookout. They hold garden parties and take \"\"<\/a>their clothes off to pose for calendars but the latest fundraising challenge certainly was a challenge! Five very plucky, hardy, cold water swimmers decided to walk around the island, stopping off for a swim at every beach. Sharon, Alex, Sara, Lorraine & Shaun (AKA The Mermaid) completed the challenge on Sunday 15th May enduring heavy rain, even thunder and lightning. They started bright and early with a swim at Billy Winters, working their way around the island.<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

At approx. 14.00 they arrived at the Coastwatch Lookout to be greeted by Station Manager Geoff Peters and the duty Watchkeepers, Len Heath & Norma Ford. After a photo shoot and a welcome celebratory glass of Bucks Fizz they set off again to complete their challenge with a final swim (and another glass of bubbly) at Chiswell<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

I think the thought of soaking in warm bubble baths when they returned home was the thing that gave them all the final push to finish what was certainly a very challenging day!<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

All five intrepid walkers\/swimmers returned (fully clothed) on 30th May to present The Lookout with the stunning amount of \u00a31,450 (including Gift Aid donation). For the third year in succession, Weyfish Ltd. on Custom House Quay Weymouth, achieved the highest total of all the placed Coastwatch Portland Bill charity “tins” in the Weymouh and Portland area. To mark this achievement a certificate of thanks signed by Geoff Peters the Station Manager NCI Portland Bill was presented by Ron Brooks and Richard Moass to Tim Withers of Weyfish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Certificate states “On behalf of the Portland Bill NCI Team, the Station Manager has great pleasure in awarding this certificate of thanks to Weyfish Ltd. for their valued and loyal support of the Coastwatch at Portland Bill – through fundraising and promoting our cause by achieving the highest amount in their collection tins in 2014, 2017, 2018 and runners up in 2015 & 2016. Portland Angling Club 2017 \u201cHeaviest weight in an open boat trophy\u201d presentation.<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The Team at Coastwatch Portland Bill commissioned a new trophy to be awarded to the Angler who won the annual \u2018Heaviest Weight In Open Boat Competition\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n

Station Manager Geoff Peters had the honour of presenting the impressive trophy to Portland Angling Club member Steve Goodwin who won the competition for the 2017 season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over the years Portland Angling Club and Coastwatch, Portland Bill have formed a very close relationship with the Anglers being prepared to \u2018strip off\u2019 on two occasions to produce calendars which were sold in aid of Coastwatch. However, everyone had their clothes on for the Club\u2019s annual presentation evening held on Saturday 17th February 2018 at The Conservative Club, Easton. The Mayor of Portland, Councillor Charlie Flack, seen here with Geoff Peters, presented the vast amount of trophies to members of the Angling Club for their various record catches, some for fish I\u2019d never even heard of!<\/p>\n\n\n

The Coastwatch Portland Bill charity collection “tin” located at Weyfish Ltd. on Custom House Quay, Weymouth is consistently one of the top contributors. Last year was no exception, Weyfish achieved the highest total for 2017 of all the charity tin locations in the area. In recognition of this and previous proactive support, Steve Abbott and Tim Withers were presented with a certificate of thanks signed by Geoff Peters the Station Manager NCI Portland Bill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On Friday 1st September, Matthew Flux of Formotion Clinics Ltd, Weymouth, swam with a group of friends and kayakers from Overcombe beach to the beach near Bats Head, to spend the night under the stars before swimming back to Overcombe beach the next day. (10miles total)<\/p>\n\n\n

In the evening he arranged a Big Swim Ball with nibbles, also there was a local musician Toby de Kretser who played to about 85 guests. The proceeds (\u00a3335) of the evening were donated to Portland Bill Coastwatch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Coastwatch banner was displayed with leaflets and VHF 65 cards to highlight the service the NCI Portland Bill team provide to the sailing community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Things Some People Do For Coastwatch!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The garden party which Alex & Peter planned to host at their home in Southwell, Portland was threatened to be a ‘wash out’ with thunderstorms and strong winds forecast for the whole day. Never to be beaten, together with their family & friends, a decision was made at 9pm the night before to hold the garden party in the Avalanche Church Hall, rather than cancel the event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The hall was packed with both locals and Portland Bill Watchkeepers and the fantastic display of delicious cream teas, homemade cakes, crab sandwiches & lobster wraps were soon devoured. The kitchen volunteers were kept busy with an endless queue for teas & coffees and the Tombola Stall added to the fundraising with a fine display of prizes and plenty of winners.<\/p>\n\n\n

Station Manager, Geoff Peters, says he cannot thank Alex, Peter and everyone who made the day possible, enough. This is the second year a day has been arranged to fundraise for their local Coastwatch Station, who would have thought that last year’s fantastic amount could have been exceeded? He added that he was glad his silent bid wasn’t quite the highest as he couldn’t possibly have been the one to throw the cream pie, after Dr Peter had helped to raise so much money for the Lookout!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chickerell Steam and Vintage Fair<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Portland NCI attended the Chickerell Steam and Vintage Fair  on 1st July.  The  team met at the venue in good time to have our stand up and running by the Fair opening time of 1000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The day started a little grey and cloudy but soon brightened up into unbroken sunshine. The volunteers manning the stand were kept busy informing the public about the role of NCI in general and Portland in particular and the Tombola was a popular attraction. There was even time during the day for a wander around the other attractions.<\/p>\n\n\n

All too soon it seemed, it was 1700 and time to pack up as we were only able to man the stand for one day.  The overall impression was that this was a well organised and popular event and it was good to be there to “show the flag” for Portland NCI . Special thanks to all the watch keepers and fundraisers who turned up to help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Portland Marina Open Days<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In recent years a Fish & Ships Boat and Food Festival was staged at Portland Marina by the operators Dean & Reddyhoff. These drew in the crowds who enjoyed the food, other stalls and stands, music and visiting groups and clubs which included vintage cars, motorbikes and cyclists among others.  However, this detracted from the aim of the festival to promote the facilities and activities in and around the Marina.  This year a different approach was undertaken in the form of a live marina open days on Saturday 3rd<\/sup> and Sunday 4th<\/sup> of June.  The open days were intended for anyone interested in boats, boating and water based activities to come along to find out how to get involved and to have a go.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An invitation to attend was taken up by NCI Portland Bill as this was an opportunity to promote our operation and to engage with the marine community, newcomers and others.  Also attendance maintains our links with Dean & Reddyhoff, who operate Portland and Weymouth Marina’s and are regular contributors to and supporters of our operation.<\/p>\n\n\n

On Saturday morning it was sunny but breezy, we were located on the grassed area facing the marina pontoons and across Weymouth Bay.  It was quiet in terms of visitors so Julian Andrews and James Kirkpatrick took the initiative to visit the boats in the marina armed with Channel 65 cards.  One notable contact they made was Christine Swain the new Commodore of Portland Yacht Club, who requested a presentation on our operation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As the day wore on visitor numbers remained quiet also the weather deteriorated later in the day.  Having consulted with the Marina Manager and members of the team and with the weather forecast indicating rain and strong winds for Sunday it was decided to cancel our attendance on the 4th<\/sup>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We were pleased to receive an invitation from the Marina Manager Russ Levett to utilise the Marina for fund raising should we have any proposals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Easton and Fortuneswell Co-op Stores and Customers Support Local Charities<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n

As part of the Co-op \u2018Divi\u2019 reintroduction scheme, whereby customers with a Co-op card receive a cashback based upon the total value of CWS products.The Co-op also offer a 1% cashback divided between nominated charities. On Wednesday 19th<\/sup> April 2017 a party of watchkeepers from NCI Portland Bill attended the presentation of nominated charity cheques and were both pleased and surprised in equal measure to receive a cheque for \u00a31,942.00.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This donation will be used to help maintain our search and rescue equipment at the Portland Bill Look-out and thereby assist us in our monitoring watch on the waters around Portland Bill, thereby helping us to provide assistance, if required, to all users of those waters whether   professional, amateur, commercial or leisure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The team at the presentation led by Stan Zapiec, together with the whole of NCI-Portland Bill watchkeeping team, thank all of the Easton and Fortuneswell Co-op  stores customers and staff for making this tremendous donation possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
